Will Jacks believes Virat Kohli’s influence on his career could help lead England to T20 World Cup glory.
Jacks will go into Tuesday’s third T20 match against Pakistan full of confidence after playing a key role in Saturday’s 23-run win at Edgbaston.
The Surrey-born batsman smashed 37 off 23 balls in what ultimately proved to be a crucial partnership with captain Jos Buttler to give England a 1-0 lead in the rain-interrupted four-match series.
It was the latest example of Jacks’ powerhouse batting, which has emerged in the Indian Premier League and has greatly impressed his Royal Challengers Bangalore team-mate Kohli.
“The great thing about the IPL is every game is special, the crowd and the atmosphere,” Jacks said ahead of England’s match against Pakistan in Cardiff, just over a week before their first World Cup match against Scotland in Barbados.
“You feel like you have to step up in every match. It’s similar to international cricket.”
“Playing in the World Cup is something I’ve dreamed of since I was a little kid, so I’m really excited to make it happen.”
“Now we’re getting closer and we’re moving in the right direction.”
Batting opposite India great Kohli could unsettle players far more experienced than Jacks.
After all, the 25-year-old’s international experience is limited to two Test matches, seven One-Day Internationals and 12 T20 appearances.
But last month, Jacks caught the eye by smashing an unbeaten hundred off just 41 balls, including 28 in an over from Rashid Khan, as Bangalore reached 200 to beat Gujarat Titans in high-pressure situations.
Kohli later said he was glad to have been able to watch the carnage at the other end and play supporting role for Jacks.
“He’s a really good role model,” said Jacks, who also bowls off-spin. “The way he approaches training, every aspect of the game off the field, his enthusiasm, 100% attention in everything he does.”
