Britain’s Rory Canter won the European Open by two strokes, ending a 13-year drought to win his first DP World Tour title.
The 34-year-old from Bath was runner-up six times before finally going trophyless in Hamburg.
He shot a 1-under 72 in the final round to secure the win at 13-under par, with Austria’s Bernd Wiesberger and South Africa’s Thriston Lawrence finishing in a tie for second place.
“I know it’s tough,” a tearful Canter said. “It’s something I’ve always wanted to do, even before I turned pro, so it’s hard to explain it now, but I’m really happy.”
Canter, who was part of the first batch of players to transfer to LIV Golf in 2022 but is now back playing on his local circuit, birdied the first hole of the final round but bogeys on the fifth and tenth holes put his first win in jeopardy.
He made some good putts on the back nine, birdieing the 11th, 15th and 16th holes to open up a three-stroke lead and even had the luxury of a dropped shot on the penultimate hole.
“I felt like I made a lot of putts when I needed to today, which I haven’t been able to do before,” Kanter said.
“It’s tough when you don’t get success in a row, it’s like a stigma, but I always knew within myself that I could win.”
Denmark’s Niklas Norgaard was in a good position going into the final round but finished in a one-over 74 to finish in a tie for fourth place, three strokes behind France’s Julien Guerrier.
