Erica and Noor talk about their experiences and aspirations as Miss Universe contestants.
Last year, Pakistan witnessed a groundbreaking moment when Erica Robin was crowned the country’s first ever Miss Universe Pakistan.
The news went viral on social media, garnering a variety of reactions and people expressing surprise at the bold move.
Part of Karachi’s vibrant Christian community, Erica has made history by representing Pakistan on the global stage, breaking stereotypes and opening doors to those who wish to go beyond societal norms.
In a stunning display of cultural pride, Erica won the hearts of the nation by choosing to wear a burkini instead of traditional Western pageant attire. Her decision not only highlighted Pakistan’s rich cultural heritage, but also challenged conventional beauty standards.
Reflecting on her choice, Erica said, “I was born and raised here. Pakistan is my home and my country. I am aware of my culture and have chosen to dress in a way that I feel is appropriate in our society. As a Christian, I respect the moral values of my country. This year is a year of acceptance and it is heartening to see that people are slowly understanding and celebrating Noor’s achievement.”
This year, all eyes are on Noor Zarmina as she prepares to represent Pakistan at the Miss Universe pageant in Mexico in October.
Exclusive Interview GeoDigitalErica and Noor each shared their experiences and aspirations.
“Doing something for the first time is never easy.
“Last year was a tough year and I faced backlash and criticism from some groups. But there were also many people who were excited that I was representing Pakistan on the world stage for the first time and supported me throughout my journey,” she recalled.
From Islamabad to the world stage: Noor’s journey
Noor Zarmina, 29, from Islamabad, was recently crowned Miss Universe Pakistan 2024 after emerging as one of the top 10 finalists.
Noor, who has a background in business and biology, recently returned to Pakistan on a mission to bring about positive change along with some acting plans.
“I was very nervous and scared, especially after what happened last year,” Noor confessed.
“But what Erica did was truly courageous – she wore a stylish burkini, walked with confidence and represented Pakistan with grace. I feel lucky to have her as a mentor – she taught me so much and was incredibly supportive. She welcomed my questions and concerns and I never hesitated to call her at 2 a.m. whenever I needed advice,” she said.
Changing Perceptions: What is the Real Purpose of Miss Universe?
“The shows we watch on TV are entertainment, but the real work starts behind the camera,” Erica explained.
“It’s about advocacy, building an educational environment, being an ambassador for peace and how you can bring about change and break stereotypes. Miss Universe is about giving a voice to women. It’s not just about looks and beauty, it’s about being proud of your culture and staying connected to your roots,” she said.
The removal of the age limit for Miss Universe this year is a big change that will open the door to more women.
Taking the Crown: A Moment of Grace and Hope
Erica expressed her feelings gracefully as she recounted the moment she handed the crown over to Noor.
“The moment of handing over the crown to Noor was symbolic. I was mentally prepared, knowing that this was the purpose of this journey — to celebrate and uplift each other. I was happy to hand over the crown to the deserving one and hope that Noor will make Pakistan proud once again,” she said.
Erica and Noor fondly reminisced about the first time they met and how their bond grew stronger while under the spotlight.
“I met Noor during a shoot. She was so confident, had such a sparkle in her eyes and such grace that I asked her if she was planning to apply for the upcoming Miss Universe pageant. She didn’t seem to know so I encouraged her to do so, and now we are sitting next to each other celebrating her success,” Erica said.
Noor added with a smile, “I always turn to Erica when I need advice. It’s great to have someone to tell me what to do and what not to do on this journey.”
Desi at Heart: Embracing Your Cultural Roots
Raised in a traditional Pakistani household, Noor proudly embraces her cultural roots, despite having travelled to several countries.
“We mostly speak Urdu at home but have drifted apart of late. Some of my friends are amazed when they see me dancing to Punjabi songs and ask me how I know all those 80s songs. Oh well! I am an Indian girl at heart.”
Both Erica and Noor have a deep love for Pakistani music and cuisine.
“The Pakistani music industry is booming all over the world and we are the best,” enthused Erica. “I love listening to Pakistani artists like Ali Sethi and of course I love biryani,” said Noor.
“Ali Zafar’s music brings back childhood memories for me. I love his voice. Food-wise, I love biryani but right now I am craving nihari as I have had enough of it during the shoot!” Noor added with a laugh.
Erica is the first Miss Universe Pakistan to be crowned in 73 years and understands the huge responsibility that comes with the title. She encouraged Pakistani women to enter the pageant without hesitation and urged the nation to support Noor as she progresses to the finals in Mexico.
She hopes that their journey will change the perception of beauty pageants in Pakistan and that they will be recognised as a platform for cultural expression and empowerment.
