Algorithms seem to steer us towards new trends that flow freely in our feeds, and lately we’ve come across a very distinctive design a number of times: square-shaped, with a handle and a zipper on top, essentially a makeup pouch that looks straight out of a professional makeup artist’s kit.

This precisely shaped handbag is frequently spotted among famous fashion personalities, casual street style outside of high fashion shows, and social media influencers who are obsessed with this cute trend, and while we may not want to avoid it, we doubt we could even if we did.

Among the first sightings, illuminated by the paparazzi cameras, was Gigi Hadid, holding a Loro Piana oversized model (around 2,300 euros) with all her might. From then on, our senses began to be stimulated, followed by Sofia Richie’s honeymoon (and other occasions), actress Jenna Ortega (who wore a printed version of Dior at the French brand’s latest show), Katie Holmes, fashionistas Leonie Hanne and Elle Fanning (who wore a mini version of Bottega) and other Hollywood stars and fashion icons.

Slowly and steadily, this square bag has trumped all competing fads. This popular style has been attracting on-trend customers lately, and our feeds bear that out, especially as Manhattan celebrities try to explain to their followers why the bag’s deceptively simple shape is so noteworthy.

What makes a “makeup pouch” bag so special? First of all, they’re simply beautiful. It’s easy to see why these designs usually feature clean lines, elegant style, and a premium leather look. They blend seamlessly with any outfit. Secondly, they’re practical. Thanks to a padded interior compartment, they offer plenty of space for all your essentials, allowing you to fit your cosmetics, phone, keys, and a compact wallet.

Brands like Saint Laurent, Prada, Dior, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Bottega Veneta, and more all sell their own versions. Some are style-oriented, while others are focused on the aforementioned practicality. Rectangular and “boxy,” the bags are versatile and many come with a removable shoulder strap, allowing them to be carried by hand like a clutch bag or slung over the shoulder like a side bag, making them sturdy and stable. Suffice it to say that every top “It Girl” is currently rocking the most elegant possible “makeup” bag with the perfect options to pair with a variety of outfits, including dresses, denim, t-shirts, and upcoming events.
