KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) – Everyone agrees that November’s NWSL Championship game will be played at CPKC Stadium in Kansas City, which is both exciting and important for the women’s sport.
Patricia Iorgu now lives in Northern California and is in town visiting family. She grew up in Springfield, Missouri, and was strolling the city and River Market with her family on Wednesday morning.
They’re all excited to hear the news, but they also spoke about what it means for past, present and new generations of female sports fans.
“Women’s sports are getting the attention they deserve and female athletes are being treated or seen as equals to male athletes, and I think that’s great not only for them but for girls growing up,” she said. “The women who have supported them all this time, I think that’s wonderful.”
“CPKC Stadium represents the explosive growth and investment we are witnessing in the NWSL, women’s soccer and women’s sports around the world,” NWSL Commissioner Jessica Berman wrote.
When I asked people what their initial reaction was, I found that to be true.
“It’s really exciting,” said Tracey Andreasen, who was strolling with her family in the River Market district. “I’m glad it’s bringing more attention to this area and more women’s sports.”
Berman continued, “It was a natural choice to hold the league’s flagship event at a venue that embodies the significant impact of infrastructure, investment and community support on the continued growth and success of our sport.”
Iorugu also said this makes her proud because she believes that in her hometown in Northern California, middle-class people don’t really care about what we do, how we do it, who our leaders are, so this investment from the NWSL is important to show the rest of the country what’s going on along the river.
