Five masked gunmen attacked two people at a New York high school after their graduation ceremony on Wednesday, slashing one person in the ear and another in the leg, injuring two others, school officials said.
The attack, which happened outside a sports facility at Hofstra University on Long Island, happened as graduating students from Hempstead and Uniondale high schools were leaving the facility with their families, according to a statement from the schools.
The statement said the person whose leg was cut was a customer of the student, who then intervened and was slashed on the ear, according to the statement.
Both victims were taken to a local hospital, but their conditions were not immediately known.
Nassau County police said they responded to a report of a possible assault on the Hofstra University campus at 4:20 p.m. It was not immediately clear whether the assailant had been taken into custody.
A statement from the school said the attack was believed to be related to a domestic dispute and that everyone who attended the ceremony passed through magnetic detectors.
“We emphasize that this incident occurred outside the graduation venue,” the statement said. “Our security team is working with Nassau County Police and Hofstra University Public Safety.”
A Hofstra University spokesperson said the campus is safe and referred further questions to police.
