(CNN) — Rapper, reality TV star and entrepreneur Flavor Flav is joining the U.S. Women’s Water Polo team for a dip in the pool ahead of this summer’s Olympics.
The musician was poolside on Tuesday, chanting “USA, USA” before removing his trademark watch medallion, donning swim shorts and an official USA Water Polo cap and entering the water.
Flav, who recently signed a sponsorship deal to become the “official spokesman for the USA Women’s and Men’s Water Polo National Teams,” said putting on the cap makes him feel like an Olympian.
“It’s not easy!” the musician yelled as he tried out the trick in the water, but the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer made it through the practice rounds smoothly and earned praise from members of the women’s team for his skill.
“You are one of the best people to join this company. [the water] “Stay with us,” one player can be heard telling him in a video posted to Instagram by USA Water Polo.
The musician, best known as a co-founder of the rap group Public Enemy, volunteered to help promote the U.S. women’s water polo team ahead of this year’s Paris Olympics after seeing captain Maggie Stephens’ Instagram post urging more people to follow the sport.
Responding to Stephens on Instagram, he vowed to “use all of my relationships and resources” to support the team in the run up to the Olympics.
“This is great because what water polo needs, and what a lot of these niche sports need, is someone to open the door to our sport. There’s only so much we as athletes can do,” Stephens previously told CNN Sport.
Stephens and her team will try to make history in Paris by becoming the first women’s water polo team to win four consecutive Olympic gold medals. All three previous gold medal victories have involved the 30-year-old Stephens.
Despite their dominance, the team remains little known to many and, like other sports, water polo can struggle to draw audiences outside the spotlight of the Olympic Games, which are held just once every four years.
