Following threats from the Islamic State-backed group ISIS-K against the India-Pakistan T20 Cricket World Cup match in Nassau, the county’s police commissioner assured on June 9 that security forces are taking appropriate measures to ensure that the safest place in Nassau, New York, is inside the stadium.
“I can guarantee you that the safest place in Nassau County on June 9th will be inside that stadium,” Patrick J. Ryder told CNN, referring to ISIS-K-related threats in April and more specific threats surrounding the India-Pakistan match.

New York State Governor Kathy Hawkle, the first female governor of the state, also spoke out on her X account, saying: “In preparation for the Cricket World Cup, my team has been working with federal and local law enforcement to ensure the safety of participants. Although there is no credible threat at this time, I have instructed the NYPD to: “We will continue to monitor the event as we approach it with increased security measures,” Hokul wrote.
Propaganda circulating on social media includes posters by pro-ISIS groups showing the date of the India vs Pakistan match next to the name of the Nassau Stadium, with the text underneath saying: “You are waiting for the match, and we are waiting for you.”

Earlier this month, Trinidad and Tobago’s Prime Minister, Keith Rowley, also spoke about the threat posed to hosting a major event like the World Cup: “Unfortunately, the threat of terrorism in its many different forms is an ever-present danger in our 21st century world. Given the many ways that bad actors can mislead, it is virtually impossible to completely block all opportunities.”
Afterwards, the ICC and Cricket West Indies said in a joint statement: “We are working closely with host country and city authorities and continually monitoring and assessing the global situation to ensure appropriate plans are in place to mitigate any identified risks to our event.”
The 2024 T20 World Cup is scheduled to begin on June 1 in Grande Prairie with a match between hosts USA and Canada.
