Former Bradley Central High School star Rhyne Howard has been selected to the 2024 USA Basketball 3×3 Women’s National Team to compete in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, the United States Basketball Association announced Wednesday.
As previously announced, Jennifer Rizzotti, president of the WNBA’s Connecticut Sun, will serve as head coach, with Tammy Rice (University of Rhode Island) as assistant coach.
Unlike 5v5, 3×3 is played in the half court with a 10 minute game clock and a 12 second shot clock. Play is continuous and teams “clear” the ball behind the 2 point line after a made basket, defensive rebound, or steal. The first team to score 21 points with a 1 point field goal or a 2 point shot behind the arc wins, or if time expires, the team leading wins.
A two-time WNBA All-Star and unanimous selection as the 2022 WNBA Rookie of the Year, Howard is in her third season with the Atlanta Dream. Through seven games this season, she is averaging 16.4 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 2.6 steals and 1.0 blocks while helping the Dream to a 4-3 record, sixth-best in the WNBA.
Her 2.6 steals per game are currently second-most in the league.
The Wildcat will represent the U.S. at the Olympic Games for the first time in program history. The All-American enjoyed a stellar career at the University of Kentucky, appearing and starting in 114 games over four seasons and averaging 20.1 points, 6.9 rebounds, 2.9 assists, 2.2 steals and 0.9 blocks per game. During her time in Blue and White, she made 284 three-pointers, which remains a school record.
The Olympic 3×3 competition begins on Tuesday, July 30th.
