NEW DELHI: Pakistan’s former prime minister Imran Khan on Friday admitted to making an “anti-army” post in which he likened the country’s current political situation to the fall of Dhaka in 1971. However, the jailed PTI leader denied any connection with the video, saying he was unaware of its contents.
Khan told reporters he regretted his earlier comments about Mujib and acknowledged that he had not yet read the Hamoodur Rehman Commission report at the time, which he said held Yahya responsible for carrying out the actions that led to the fall of Dhaka, Dawn reported.
He further said the report emphasised two objectives – to hold those responsible for the fall of Dhaka accountable and to suggest measures to prevent a similar mistake from being repeated.
Pointing to Pakistan’s economic crisis, Khan said the country has been through the same thing time and time again to the point of the economy being pushed to the brink of collapse. He said the PDM government’s amendments to the Accountability Act have cost the national exchequer Rs1.1 trillion and claimed that a country already “on its knees” could not bear such a loss.
“Every Pakistani should study the Hamood-ur-Rahman Commission report and know who is the real traitor – General Yahya Khan or Sheikh Mujibur Rahman,” the post read.
The post, which included a video comparing the military leadership of General Yahya Khan and Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was uploaded by Imran’s social media team on May 26.
