Bushra Bibi, the wife of a former Pakistani prime minister, was granted interim bail on Tuesday by the Specialized Accountability Court in Rawalpindi, Reuters reported. Bibi and Khan are accused of accepting funding from a land developer to set up Al Qadir University in a corruption case they have both denied any wrongdoing.
In December last year, the National Accountability Bureau launched an investigation against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Khan, his wife Bushra Bibi and others for allegedly acquiring acres of land under the guise of Al Qadir University Trust.
Earlier, on May 15, Imran Khan was released on bail by the Islamabad High Court (IHC) in a land corruption case.
This resulted in a reported loss of £190 million to the Treasury.
The Al Qadir Trust case revolves around a settlement of £190 million (about Rs 50 billion) that the UK’s National Crime Agency recovered from a Pakistani real estate tycoon and transferred to Pakistan. During his tenure as prime minister, Khan allowed the businessman to use the money to settle part of a fine of about Rs 450 billion previously imposed by the Supreme Court, instead of paying it into the state exchequer.
