Texas Tech University’s golf program will have two former players competing in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Shannon Tan was among 60 women’s qualifiers announced this week, and Ludvig Aberg was among 60 men’s qualifiers announced last week. The men’s tournament will be Aug. 1-4 and the women’s tournament Aug. 7-10. Both are 72-hole tournaments at Le Golf National, home of the Ryder Cup in 2018.

Tan turned professional in January after qualifying for the Women’s European Tour just before Christmas midway through her sophomore season at Texas Tech. She made her pro debut in February, winning the LET’s Magical Kenya Ladies Open by four strokes.

Tan is Singapore’s first golfer to compete in the Olympics since golf was included as an Olympic sport in 2016. The 20-year-old Tan is ranked 181st in the world.

At the Italian Women’s Open, which concluded on June 16, Tan tied for third place while former Texas Tech player Amy Taylor won by one stroke. Tan has three other top 15 finishes this year on the Ladies European Tour.

Aberg turned professional a year ago after his senior season at Tech and has become one of the sport’s rising stars. In addition to two wins since turning pro, Aberg has finished runner-up at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and the Masters, finished eighth at The Players Championship and tied for 12th at the U.S. Open.

The 24-year-old from Sweden is ranked fourth in the world this week.

According to the International Golf Federation, the top 15 players in the world are eligible to compete in the Olympics, but only four players per country can participate. Players beyond the top 15 qualify based on their world rankings, and if a country does not have at least two players in the top 15, a maximum of two players per country may qualify.

The 60 men’s team represents 32 countries and the 60 women’s team represents 33 countries. The two-year qualification period began on 17 June 2022.

Former Tech men’s golfer Mito Pereira tied for fourth place at the 2021 Tokyo Olympic tournament in the summer.
