Novak Djokovic withdraws from 2024 French Open Although he is unable to play due to a knee injury, the show must go on and there is still plenty of talent remaining at Roland Garros.
Djokovic arrived in Paris as the world’s No. 1 ranked player, but that ranking was held by Jannik Sinner, 22, who won his first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open earlier this year, making him the first Italian man to be officially ranked No. 1 in the world.
“Obviously, Novak’s retirement meant I didn’t get to No. 1 in the world, which is what I wanted, but in another sense, I’ve been playing really good tennis during this time and I’m happy to be in this position,” Sinner said. “Something new is coming for me, something good is coming, so I’m very happy.”
Sinner struggled with a hip injury earlier this year but has been in good form at Roland Garros, beating Grigor Dimitrov 6-2, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) to reach the semi-finals.
Historically, this tournament belongs to Rafael Nadal, but the Spanish legend lost in the first round to Alexander Zverev and this may be his last match at Roland Garros. Spain will not be without a star player, as 21-year-old Spanish star Carlos Alcaraz is making a name for himself. He is one of the favorites to win the French Open and has already qualified for the quarterfinals, where he will face Stefanos Tsitsipas.
In the women’s tournament, world number one Iga Swiatek nearly lost to Naomi Osaka in the second round before winning her way to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Anastasia Potapova in the quarterfinals in just 40 minutes, the shortest tour-level match of her career.
Swiatek hasn’t lost at Roland Garros since the quarterfinals in 2021 and is currently on a 19-match winning streak at Roland Garros. She also has a 17-match winning streak on clay courts thanks to victories in Madrid and Rome. She’s fresh off a 6-0, 6-2 win over Marketa Vondrousova and will face American star Coco Gauff in the semifinals on Thursday.
Gauff qualified by beating Ons Jabeur 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 on Tuesday. She has never won the French Open but reached the final in 2022. The 20-year-old won her first major title at the U.S. Open last year.
