ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – Georgia’s top political leaders are speaking out ahead of the first and highly anticipated presidential debate of the 2024 election season.
Former President Donald Trump narrowly lost Georgia to President Joe Biden in 2020, but some predict Georgia could be a close race again in November.
“Despite our history, I have a vested interest in Georgia staying in Republican hands,” Gov. Brian Kemp said Wednesday.

Kemp said he did not vote for the former president in the primary but would support him in November’s election.
Trump and Biden are scheduled to face off in the first 2024 presidential debate on Thursday in Atlanta before facing off on the ballot this fall.
“I think President Trump has an opportunity to speak out about these issues and say, ‘When I was president, gas prices weren’t this high, insurance premiums weren’t this high, mortgage rates weren’t this high,'” Kemp said.
On the day of the debate, Sen. Raphael Warnock, R-Pa., had a different message for Peach State voters. He was in Atlanta discussing health care and touting Biden’s record.

“Any action other than coming together to vote for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris puts us on the brink of a frightening choice,” Warnock said.
Warnock said he had accompanied the president and vice president to Georgia in the past few months.
“Every vote counts and we will continue to send the message about the fact that Black wealth is now more than 60 percent higher than it was before the pandemic and that we have delivered $164 billion in student loan forgiveness,” Warnock said.
The presidential debate begins at 9 p.m.
