She also had a moment on the court during Tuesday’s (May 21) Aces-Mercury game that showed she wasn’t going to stay quiet. Young was part of the first team to win an Olympic gold medal in women’s 3×3 basketball. She was not originally named to the team. Katie Lou Samuelson Young was asked to immediately withdraw from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics after testing positive for COVID-19.
She quickly adapted and integrated with the other three members of her team, who won the gold medal in the inaugural Olympic Games for 3×3 basketball with an 18-15 victory over the Russian Olympic Committee.
“It’s unbelievable when you think about it,” Young said at the time. “Ten days ago, I was on vacation. My life just changed like that. Now I’m a gold medalist. I can’t believe things have worked out.”
Currently, she is in the running to make the U.S. women’s five-on-one team and was a key member of the U.S. team that won the Belgian Olympic Qualifiers in February. In the meantime, Young can be seen playing for the Las Vegas Aces, who take on the Indiana Fever on Saturday (May 25).
