The University of Georgia and Georgia Tech are scheduled to play this fall on Black Friday, the same day high school football games are typically played in the state, an adjustment made by the GHSA.
As Todd Holcomb of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports, in a move that makes sense for all involved, the Georgia High School Association has decided to delay the football playoff semifinals by a week to avoid a conflict with a Friday night game between Georgia State and Georgia Tech on Nov. 29.
The move of the game to Friday, Georgia’s first home game since 1994, was announced Thursday. Georgia and Georgia Tech will face Ole Miss and Mississippi State in primetime matchups on Black Friday. The Egg Bowl will be at 3:30 p.m. ET, followed by the Clean Old Fashioned Hate at 7:30 p.m.
The news from the GHSA means a lot for a few reasons. Most importantly, it allows the high school to get the attention it so rightfully deserves. Georgia is one of the top high school football states in the nation, so making it to the semifinals is a big accomplishment. This allows fans to watch the Georgia vs. Georgia Tech game without missing a high school game. It also has a big benefit for recruiting purposes, as Georgia and Georgia Tech staff will be able to attend these games. Kirby Smart probably wasn’t too happy about potentially missing out on the semifinal game and recruiting opportunities.
The change also means the state championship game will be postponed a week and will now be played at Mercedes-Benz Stadium from Dec. 16-18, avoiding a conflict with the Dec. 7 SEC Championship.
Overall, the new bye week in the GHSA Football Playoffs is a big win for football fans across the state of Georgia. It certainly makes the season longer for teams that make it to the Final Four, but I don’t think any coaches or players are going to complain about a week off.
