Champagne chrome, glazed donut, and Fombre manicures are all the rage this summer, but there’s another look we’re excited to share: glass manicures. Born out of necessity from our obsession with glass skin, glass nails have a lot in common with glass skin: they’re healthy, clean, and shiny.
“The idea for glass nails came from nail technicians looking for techniques to make nails as shiny and reflective as possible,” explains celebrity nail technician Harriet Westmoreland. “Glass nails are more subtle than traditional chrome and the light reflects more like glass rather than the look of a chrome effect. It’s the next step after chrome.”
Thought to have originated in Korea, this effect requires more skill than you might imagine. “The key to glass nails is the correct application,” Westmoreland points out. “You apply a coat of chrome as a base, and then a pretty thick top coat. [nail enhancement] On top, the light that hits the chrome will reflect, but because the chrome is underneath the clear gel instead of on top, it creates a more subtle effect.”
To achieve this effect at home, Westmoreland recommends the following layering system: Base, Chrome, Apex Clear Gel. [the smoothing and strengthening layer you apply on top of or underneath a colour or nail design to help it last]And finally apply top coat.
