Global tech outage disrupts travel, cancellations and delays continue at Miami, Florida airports – WSVN 7News | Miami news, weather and sports

MIAMI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, Fla. (WSVN) – Delays and cancellations continue at Miami International Airport and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport nearly two days after chaos erupted around the world and brought some airlines to a screeching halt.

The IT issues, which began on Thursday night, have been resolved, but the ripple effects of this global outage are still being felt at airports across the country and around the world.

But airlines are in a much better position than they were on Friday, when a software disruption caused by cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike caused many flights to be canceled or delayed.

“There was a long line just to check in to drop off our bags. We waited in line for an hour, then found out the flight was canceled,” said Deleeanna Smith, a traveler from Georgia who was scheduled to board a Delta flight.

Smith and her family arrived at MIA after a cruise, only to receive news Saturday night that they would have trouble getting home.

“We have to drive 10 hours, and it’s already 10 o’clock at night,” she said, “but we have to factor in traffic jams and breaks along the way, so we can’t get home until tomorrow. That’s a big deal for us.”

Delta Air Lines tweeted Saturday morning that as of 10 a.m., more than 600 flights on Delta and Delta Connection airlines had been canceled, mostly during the morning and early afternoon hours on Saturday.

But Delta officials said they expect more cancellations as technology recovers.

Still, flight boards at MIA and FLL showed a significant improvement compared to Friday morning, with fewer cancellations and delays and more planes showing on-time departures.

Jorge Guasso was traveling from Paris.

“I know how bad it was, so I’m just glad it’s not so bad anymore,” he said.

Others, like Zach Palmer and his family, are looking to make the most of their free time in the Sunshine State.

“The earliest booking is Monday afternoon so we’ll be here an extra two days, but the kids are excited. [hit] “South Beach is booming again,” Palmer said.

Delta officials said the airline will waive change fees for travelers if they need to rebook their tickets before July 25.

Because this varies by airline, travelers are encouraged to contact their airline to see how they are helping customers resolve this issue and check the status of their flight before heading to the airport.
