Texas Governor Greg Abbott has selected a medical student from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center to serve as the next Student Senator for the Texas Tech University System Board of Regents.

Jad Zeitouni is from Lubbock, attended Lubbock Cooper High School and is currently a student at TTUHSC, according to a news release from the school.

He is pursuing his MD degree at the School of Medicine and is studying public health at the Julia Jones Matthews School of Population and Public Health.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has selected Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center medical student Jad Zeitouni as the 19th Student Senator for the Texas Tech University System Board of Governors.

“Jud is an exceptional leader and I congratulate him for the opportunity to serve on the Student Trustees,” TTUHSC President Lori Rice Spearman said in a statement. “He has made service to others a priority and has made a positive impact on his community, university, state and nation. With an academic background at two system institutions, Jud’s unique perspective and understanding will undoubtedly be an asset as he represents students across the TTU system.”

Throughout his higher education journey, Zeitouni has been heavily involved in several programs, including the Physicians for Human Rights Advisory Committee, the American Medical Association Global and Public Health Medical Student Committee, and the Toronto University of Advanced Studies Faculty of Medicine Student Affairs Committee. He was selected to serve on the editorial board of the AMA Journal of Ethics and authored a thematic feature on the role of private equity and healthcare to be published in May 2025. He also co-leads the Toronto University of Advanced Studies Faculty of Medicine Independent Student Analysis Subcommittee for accreditation by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education.

According to the system, Zeitouni has co-authored eight publications and three abstracts on a variety of health and medical topics, and serves as co-founder and co-director of the TTU System Health Policy Think Tank.

His first experience in the U.S. Congress was as an intern in the House of Representatives, where he collaborated on health policy and strategy, and foreign policy research. Mr. Zeitouni also served as an intern at the United Nations Information Centre, where his responsibilities included researching global health policy, U.S. health policy, World Health Organization policy, reporting for congressional hearings, and directing a think tank.

“Our students are our most important stakeholder group, and our goal is to provide them with an unparalleled educational experience and the tools they need to be successful after graduation,” TTU System Chancellor Ted L. Mitchell said in a statement. “As Student Trustee, Judd has the great responsibility and opportunity to be a voice for his peers and ensure we achieve this goal. I am grateful to him for taking on this important role on behalf of the system and look forward to seeing the impact he will make in the year ahead.”

Zeitouni is also a Texas Tech University graduate, having earned his Bachelor of Science in Accounting, cum laude, from the Jerry S. Rawls School of Business in 2021.

Zeitouni will serve as the board’s 19th student trustee and the seventh student elected from TTUHSC. His one-year term begins June 1 and ends May 31, 2025.
