Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry condemned a spate of violent attacks on international fast-food outlets, pledging strict action against those involved in the incidents that have occurred in multiple cities.

Talal Chaudhry told reporters in Faisalabad on Saturday that the state would deal “strictly” with anyone involved in damaging public or private property, saying such acts would be treated as “no different than a terrorist attack”.

At least 20 separate incidents were reported across Sindh and Punjab, including in Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi and Sheikhupura.

In the most serious case, a worker was fatally shot when armed men attacked a restaurant in Sheikhupura on April 14.

“These franchises invest over $100 million in Pakistan, employ more than 25,000 people, pay 100% taxes, and buy from local vendors,” said Chaudhry. “The entire profit stays in Pakistan. What excuse is there for such attacks?”

Chaudhry stressed that the targeted franchises were locally owned and operated, and said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had ordered immediate provincial coordination to protect businesses and arrest suspects.

He confirmed that 145 arrests had been made in Punjab and 15 in Islamabad, with 12 FIRs registered.

Those detained, he said, expressed remorse and sought forgiveness.

Responding to reports of political involvement, Chaudhry said investigations showed no party organised the violence.

“No political or religious party called for these acts. Some individuals may have acted on their own,” he said, adding that clerics had issued decrees labelling such actions as un-Islamic.

He also noted the impact on Pakistan’s investment climate. “Investors are our crown,” he said. “We are taking all steps to uphold law and protect the livelihoods of thousands.”

Police said suspects were traced using CCTV footage, while additional security measures had been deployed at commercial locations.
