HOUGHTON — After several second-place finishes behind Lake Linden-Hubbell Lakes this track season, the Houghton Gremlins boys earned their highest home podium spot on Monday.
The boys team won the Copper Country Invitational Tournament with 169.5 points. Lakes scored 142 points and Ironwood was third with 50 points.
Lakes took first place among girls with 116.33 points. Gremlin took second place with 97.5 points, and Calumet took third place with 77 points.
“I was really impressed by the amount of talent from each school today.” Gremlins coach Eric Johnson said. “Lake Linden is very strong and well-coached and gave us everything we could handle today.”
Great finishes on the track for the Gremlins include Luke Hill’s 2:01 time in the 800-meter dash. Colin Van Kaasen ran a personal best time of 11 minutes and 57 seconds in the 3200 meter dash. Similarly, the Horton relay team of Bryant Lee, Noah Kreipke, Brody Mattila, and Samuel Ross posted a standard time of 56.6 seconds in the 400-meter relay.
“The players have really shown their mettle this past week with the amount of games we’ve had.” Johnson added. “We set a lot of season records and lifetime bests today. We did it as a team this time, so it’s hard to pick just one person.”
For the Lakes girls, consistency on the podium was the key to victory.
Monday’s top finishers included the 800-meter relay team of Abi Coderre, Ella Schneiderhan, Isabella Tampas and Rebecca Lyons. He also placed second in the 400-meter relay.
The other standout performance was Coderre in the 100 meter hurdles. His teammate Emily Jokera won the 300 meter hurdles.
“Everyone has stepped up this year to do what it takes to win as a team.” Lakes coach Brett Gervais said.
