Hailstorm, rains ravage Bhakkar crops

BHAKKAR:

A powerful spell of heavy rain accompanied by an intense hailstorm lashed Bhakkar and its surrounding areas on Monday, causing disruption, damaging crops and raising serious concerns among farmers about potential financial losses.

The sudden hailstorm, described by residents as unprecedented in intensity, blanketed fields in white, giving the appearance of snowfall within minutes.

Strong winds uprooted trees at several locations, while electricity supply was temporarily suspended in parts of the district, adding to the difficulties faced by residents.

The worst impact was reported in agricultural areas, where standing crops, particularly gram (chickpea), suffered significant damage. Bhakkar contributes nearly 40% to 50% of the country’s gram production, making the situation particularly alarming for both farmers and the broader agricultural economy.

For the farmers of the Thal region, this season had brought renewed hope after nearly 15 years of drought-like conditions caused by irregular rainfall.

Timely rains earlier this year had improved crop conditions, raising expectations of a healthy harvest. However, the unseasonal hailstorm has now threatened to destroy those gains, leaving farmers worried about heavy financial losses.

Local residents from areas including Anar Shah, Barkat Wala, Kath Morr, and Jandanwala said they had never witnessed such a severe hailstorm in the region’s history.

Many reported that people turned to supplication during the storm, seeking protection as hailstones pounded fields and orchards.

According to eyewitnesses, the hailstorm continued for a considerable duration, damaging not only crops but also fruit trees and vegetation.

Agricultural experts have warned that if such weather conditions persist, they could severely affect the yield of wheat, gram, and other seasonal crops.

The meteorological department has forecast further rainfall over the next 24 hours, intensifying concerns among farmers already reeling from the unexpected damage.

Affected growers have urged the government to conduct an immediate survey of the losses and announce compensation to support the farming community.

Meanwhile, in Bhakkar city, continuous rainfall over the past 24 hours has led to significant water accumulation in streets and low-lying areas, disrupting traffic and daily routines. Residents faced difficulties in commuting as several roads remained partially submerged.

In response, the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) Bhakkar launched prompt drainage operations across the city.

WASA Managing Director Rizwan Akbar Jatt, personally monitored the situation and directed teams to ensure swift removal of rainwater.

Officials said all disposal stations were operating at full capacity, while field staff and machinery remained active round the clock to manage the situation.
