The showdown between a former prosecutor and a convicted felon is the latest development in the 2024 presidential election.
Democratic front-runner Kamala Harris is using her background as a prosecutor to campaign against Donald Trump, the businessman and former president who was convicted of 34 felony counts of falsifying business records.
Since President Joe Biden dropped out of the 2024 presidential race, American voters now face an unusual choice between two nearly polar opposite candidates — two people who differ in just about every way. USA Today measured some of those differences and charted the results.

Gender and Ethnicity: Harris Join Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton
In 2020, Harris became the first person of color to be elected vice president.
In 2024, Harris again stands out among the two major parties because of her gender and ethnicity. She combines the milestones achieved by two candidates in the past four presidential elections.
Harris will be the second black presidential candidate after Obama in 2008 and the second woman to serve in the 2016 election after Hillary Clinton. If elected, she would be the first woman, the first black woman and the first South Asian American to serve as president.
How old is Kamala Harris compared to Donald Trump?
Harris is 59 and Trump is 78. The age gap of more than 18 years is the fourth-largest age gap between candidates in the past 50 years. There was a three-and-a-half-year gap between Biden and Trump. The largest gap was between Barack Obama and John McCain, who had a gap of about 25 years in the 2008 election.
Kamala Harris’ record is very different from Donald Trump’s
Trump’s winding path to the White House began in 1968, just four years after Harris was born, when he joined his father’s real estate and construction company. Harris began her career as a district attorney and held a variety of local, state and national offices before becoming vice president.
Trump worked in his father’s business for five years, and one of his first construction projects after starting his own business was the renovation of the facade of New York City’s Commodore Hotel and Grand Central Terminal in 1976.
Trump is the founder of the Trump Organization, star of the reality TV show “The Apprentice,” and a former president of the United States, which he served as president for four years.
Harris has a 34-year history of public service, beginning her career as an Assistant District Attorney for Alameda County, California in 1990. She joined the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office in 1998 and was elected District Attorney for San Francisco in a runoff election in 2003.
Harris was elected California’s attorney general in 2010 and 2014. She was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2016 and served as Biden’s vice president in 2021.
