Four Harvard Business School faculty members — Juan Alcácer, Ryan Buell, David Moss and Sofas Reinert — have received Faculty Teaching Awards from the Class of 2024.

The award is given to professors who have demonstrated exceptional dedication to teaching and have had a significant positive impact on students’ academic and personal growth. Students select faculty members based on six criteria: inspiration, knowledge transfer, accessibility, career guidance, quality of life, and feedback.

“When we look back on our time at Harvard Business School, we all remember at least one faculty member who left an indelible mark on our lives,” said Matt Glynn, Katie Condrey, and Tricia Peralta, co-chairs of the Class of 2024 Day Committee. “For some, the lens or framework a professor imparted changed their worldview. For others, their thoughtful advice and support gave them the courage to make difficult decisions. This year’s Faculty Teaching Award recipients are being recognized for the extraordinary impact they made in providing a truly special experience for the Class of 2024.”

Juan Alcacer

Juan Alcácer, professor in the Strategy Unit, was the first to receive the award. Students praised him for his dedication to their professional and personal growth.

“Professor Alcacer has had a tremendous impact not only on our education but on us as individuals,” said one student. “It’s clear how much effort he makes to understand and support us, not just academically but also personally. His passion for education and genuine concern for his students is apparent in everything he does and is truly inspiring to witness.”

Sophus Reinert

Sofas Reinert, a professor in the Business, Government and International Economics unit and a five-time award winner, was recognized for encouraging diverse perspectives and facilitating complex discussions in the classroom.

“I looked forward to Mr. Sofas’ class every day and I think it’s great that he has created an environment where all opinions are equally and reasonably considered, which can be difficult at times,” one student commented. “Unlike most teachers I’ve had, he is open-minded and doesn’t let his opinions bias his instruction.”

Ryan Buell

Ryan Buell, a professor in the Technology and Operations Management Unit and a first-time recipient, was recognized by his students for the enthusiasm and preparation he brings to each class.

“Professor Buell is a great professor and a great person,” said one student. “He made a very technical subject more understandable and fun to learn. He was always available for students both in and out of the classroom, engaging with them and talking about life, personal projects, and course topics. He was very honest and open in class, and his vulnerability inspired us to bring our true selves to his classes and discussions.”

David Moss

Another professor in the Business, Government and International Economics unit, 12-time award winner David Moss, was recognized for his mastery of the case method and for facilitating thoughtful discussion. Students noted that Moss’s wealth of experience enabled him to lead engaging, insightful discussions about complex business challenges.

“Professor Moss embodies the case method,” said one student. “He is an expert at facilitating and debating complex topics like the Great Depression. He draws from a variety of fields, including finance, economics, history, and sociology, and challenges us to think beyond our immediate situation and into the broader context, which I would say is the pinnacle of a ‘liberal arts’ education at HBS. He also truly cares about each and every student, and was available to answer all of my questions during his office hours and after class.”
