LAKE PLACID — The Lake Placid girls flag football team recorded its first win Friday night, defeating the Northern Adirondack Bobcats 26-19 at North Elba Athletic Field.
With the score tied at 19-19 with about two minutes left in the game, Blue Bombers quarterback Anisa Sekunjanin completed a long pass to freshman Eliza Fitzsimmons to give her team the lead. Senior Nadia Phillip drew a pass from Chekunjanin for the extra point, clinching the victory.
Lake Placid head coach Tammy Morgan said Olivia Skutto had a tremendous game defensively. Skutto led the team in tackles (flag pulls), although he played only in the first half due to injury. After the victory, the Blue Bombers improved to 1 win and 4 losses overall.
Morgan also credited offensive coordinators Kevin Morgan and David Snyder for leading his team to victory Friday.
Upon Northern Adirondack’s first possession, the team marched down the field and scored its first touchdown. The extra point attempt failed, but the Bobcats led 6-0.
Lake Placid had Phillip running in the end zone on its next drive, scoring an extra point and giving his team a 7-6 lead.
Northern Adirondack scored on its second possession and managed to get an extra point to take back the lead at 13-7. Just before intermission, Filip reeled in a pass from Chekunjanin, tying the score at 13-13.
In the second half, the Bombers gained momentum when Sekunjanin dashed 30 yards and scored. Northern Adirondack also responded with a pass up the middle, but neither team was able to score on the extra point, leaving the score at 19-19.
Lake Placid stepped up its defense and shut out its opponents for the rest of the game. Fiona Sullivan and Talia Anastasia contributed solid defense to the team.
The Blue Bombers are scheduled to play the Schroon Lake Wildcats at North Elba Athletic Field on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
