Highly athletic three-star defensive back enrolls in Texas Tech football program

After a busy weekend featuring some outstanding freshmen, Joey McGuire and the Texas Tech football program have landed an intriguing defensive back in the class of 2025. Swade Griffin, a three-star defensive back from Lago Vista, Texas, announced his commitment to the Red Raiders via social media on Monday.

The 6-foot-1, 185-pound player is listed as the No. 101 cornerback in the nation and the No. 180 in the state of Texas by 247Sports.com. In addition to Texas Tech, he also holds offers from Arizona, Arizona State and Minnesota.

But the Red Raiders were Griffin’s first offer, and it looks like that early connection has paid off: The two-sport athlete, who won the UIL 4-A 110-meter hurdles state title, was in Lubbock last weekend and now plans to commit to the Red Raiders.

“I had no idea they were coming,” Griffin told Greg Powers of Dave Campbell’s Texas Football of the Day about Texas Tech offering him a scholarship almost a year ago. “They just showed up one day. Honestly, I thought they were going to recruit me for athletics, but then they offered me. It was just awesome.”

Fans may be better acquainted with Griffin’s father, Cedric, who played seven years in the NFL, including six with the Minnesota Vikings and one with the Washington franchise, as a defensive back for the Texas Longhorns from 2002-05. Griffin’s father recorded eight interceptions and 412 tackles in his NFL career.

Griffin is the Red Raiders’ 13th commit in the 2025 enrollment class, which ranks 23rd nationally according to 247Sports. Interestingly, he’s also the fourth defensive back in the class.

On Sunday, Texas Tech coach Joey Maguire posted two .GIFs of former professional wrestler Ric Flair on social media. Texas Tech fans know this means Maguire has secured some sort of deal from a prospect. Even if one of those deals is Griffin’s, there should be more good news to come on the recruiting front.

It’s a busy time for football recruiting right now, and it’s set to continue over the coming days and weeks as Texas Tech is set to host another group of high-priority targets this weekend. Keep checking Wreck ’em Red for the latest updates as McGuire and company continue another strong recruiting spree on the South Plains.
