This is the latest in the 5th District’s “Meet the Candidates” series, in which we ask each candidate to answer one question each week leading up to the election. Three candidates are incumbent to represent District 5, which stretches from the eastern edge of Golden Gate Park to Haight-Ashbury, Japantown, the Western Addition, Lower Haight and Hayes Valley, and much of the Tenderloin. He is challenging director Dean Preston.

This week we’re talking business, as the 5th arrondissement is home to several vibrant commercial districts. We asked candidates: What is the state of business in District 5? How do you plan to support businesses large and small as supervisor?

Note: Go to Alamo Square Cafe, 711 Fillmore St., on Thursday, May 9th at noon. Please come say hello.

District 5 Supervisor Dean Preston

Lived in Ward 5 since 1996.

as Only former small business owner on the board, I know how difficult it is to run a business in San Francisco.I was an early supporter shared spacedefended the following ordinance stop business evictions During the pandemic return rent, safety Subsidy For Fillmore Entrepreneurs, Victim Assistance Program for Businesses Affected by Vandalismfunded power cleaning of sidewalksmore.

our District 5’s small business recovery is strong, but there’s still much work to doespecially for businesses in the Tenderloin.

I am proud to be supported by Small Business Forward, business owners and workers throughout the 5th District.

Supporters: Bernie Sanders, San Francisco United Educators, San Francisco Labor Council, San Francisco Tenants Union, National Health Care Workers Union

District 5 Candidate Allen Jones

Living in Ward 5 since November 2021.

I don’t understand the management situation in Ward 5.. I read the report and it doesn’t match what I witnessed. However, as a resident, Commit to spending at least $100 on new business. For example, Minnie Bell’s Soul Movement just opened on Fillmore Street. Holy Stitch on Market Street is home to a soon-to-open denim factory and Plus facility. We need the whole concept here.

As a supervisor, based on negative experiences I have had with past and current supervisors, Open your ears and mind to creativity.

District 5 Candidate Bilal Mahmood

I have lived in the 5th ward since May 2023, and next door since May 2021.

Bilal Mahmood

Businesses in the 5th Ward have had a hard time recovering since the pandemic; Our neighborhoods suffered a devastating loss of vibrancy.. For example, Haight and Hayes have collectively lost more than 1,000 businesses, a net decrease of 5% since 2020.

I will give priority Invigorate the business community by streamlining permitting processes and reducing red tape Promote a supportive business environment.

Our economic resilience also Supporting diversity and inclusion in business. I have had the opportunity to meet with local business owners in the district and they share the same concerns.

Sponsored by: State Sen. Scott Wiener, Honey Mahogany DCCC Chair
