Yahoo Sports’ Jay Busby explains how LPGA golfer Charlie Hull broke into the mainstream this weekend.

It was a big weekend in professional golf.
Yuka Sasao won the U.S. Women’s Open in a dramatic comeback victory.
And big man Bob McIntyre won the PGA Tour’s RBC Canadian Open with his father.
It’s a very heartwarming sight to see caddying.
But with all due respect to those two stories, the biggest winner this week, L PGA veteran Charlie Hull, didn’t win the tournament, but he did win on social media, and in 2020, that’s what counts.
She has been playing on the LPGA for 10 years.
But for some reason, this was the weekend that catapulted her into the mainstream outside of golf as well, mainly due to the fact that she was seen smoking before, during and after her round.
Now people love it.
This wouldn’t have seemed out of place in the 1980s, but in 2024, only John Daly is doing it.
Not only that, but she played pretty well, finishing tied for 19th, fending off hecklers along the way and even turning down a date proposal or two.
So far, she hasn’t had much success in the major leagues.
Her best result to date is second place.
But she’s doing well, and what’s more, she’s fun.
And that’s what golf needs.
right now.
We need characters, we need stories, we need people like Charlie Hall.
So we’re going to be seeing a lot more of her in the future.
