How to Style This Season’s ’90s Minimalism Trend

The ’90s are back, but don’t worry, it’s the best part: there are no chokers, flannel shirts, or butterfly hair clips in sight.

Rather, one of the biggest trends for Spring/Summer 2024 is an ode to the minimalism that is so characteristic of the ’90s.

Maybe it’s because it’s the 25th anniversary of the death of Carolyn Bassett-Kennedy, the fashion icon known for her impeccable tailoring and minimalist wardrobe, or maybe it’s because we’ve finally reached dopamine-fueled outfit fatigue (apart from the red trend, of course).

Whatever the reason, we’re craving polished ’90s basics, and all the designers agree: Tove brought the strapless tube dress, Tibi brought the masculine suit, Staud pushed the tank top and bubble skirt combo, Max Mara championed the camel pencil skirt, Proenza Schouler teamed longline leather jackets with low-rise jeans, and Theory brought back tailored pedal pushers.

There’s no doubt that minimalism is key, from simple cuts to a color palette that ranges from grey to beige. Black and white are the foundations of this ’90s capsule collection.

Luckily, you probably already have all the elevated basics you need to nail this trend, but if not, consider this your ultimate ’90s minimalist trend shopping list: tank tops, pencil skirts, masculine suits, tube/spaghetti strap dresses, leather jackets, pedal pushers, slim line shirts, simple flats, low rise jeans, and baguette bags.
