Below is a recent AP article about the French Open.
GENEVA (AP) — Novak Djokovic lost in the Geneva Open semifinals on Friday and is yet to lift a trophy this season, but he will defend his French Open title in Paris.
Tomas Maczak, ranked 44th in the world, beat Djokovic 6-4, 0-6, 6-1 in the final clay-court tournament before the French Open, which begins its main draw on Sunday.
“Of course I’m worried. I haven’t played well at all this year,” Djokovic said.
In 2024, his record fell to 14-6 overall and 0-3 in semifinals, including a loss to Jannik Sinner at the Australian Open.
“I don’t see myself as a favorite,” the world number one-ranked Serb, who has won two of the last three titles and three of his record 24 men’s singles Grand Slam titles, said of his chances at Roland Garros. “I’m just going to take it match by match and see how far I can go.”
Machak had his first match point opportunity on Djokovic’s serve and sealed the win when Djokovic pushed a backhand long.
Djokovic lost his serve for the fifth time and made 27 unforced errors.
“When I play against Novak, I just try my best and see how it goes,” Maczak said in an on-court interview.
Djokovic gave the Czech player a warm welcome at the net and was all smiles as he left the court, applauding the fans.
Djokovic took a medical timeout after the first set due to stomach problems.
“I felt terrible today, stomach-wise and health-wise. It wasn’t a great night and today was no different,” he said. “I’m not going to deny him the win. He deserved it.”
Maczak will play his first tour final on Saturday against either Kasper Ruud, a two-time Geneva Open champion and French Open runner-up the past two years, or unseeded Flavio Coboli. Their semifinal match was prevented from starting on time by a lengthy rain delay.
