ABC News reporter George Stephanopoulos spoke to a passerby and said he regretted saying he thought President Joe Biden could not serve another four years.
TMZ posted a video of the exchange on the street in New York City, in which Stephanopoulos was asked, “Do you think Biden should resign?”
“I don’t think I can serve another four years,” Stephanopoulos can be heard saying, though the audio of his reply is a little hard to hear.
Stephanopoulos interviewed Biden on Friday in his first television interview since his tough debate performance raised questions about his health and the viability of his reelection campaign.
“Today I reacted to a passerby and I should not have done so,” Stephanopoulos said in a statement released Tuesday night by ABC News spokesman Brooks Lancaster.
In a separate statement, ABC News said, “George expressed his own views and does not represent a position of ABC News.”
Stephanopoulos interviewed Biden about a week after Biden’s debate performance caused shock and panic among some Democrats, raising doubts about whether he could win the November election or even serve another term.
Biden has rejected calls to step down, and on Monday reiterated he would continue to campaign and said he believes he is the best person to defeat former President Donald Trump in November.
