RAWALPINDI:

Former prime minister Imran Khan was allowed to telephone his sons — Kasim and Sulaiman — from Rawalpindi’s Adial Jail on Eid day. The jailed PTI founder spoke to his children, who live in the United Kingdom, for around 25 to 30 minutes.

According to sources, during the conversation, the sons inquired about their father’s health, while Imran expressed happiness at being able to speak with them on the festive occasion.

The PTI founder was brought out of the compound to a special room for the call and, after the conversation, was taken back to the compound, sources added.

Imran Khan, who has been detained since August 2023, has faced restrictions on meeting his family members and lawyers and telephoning his sons since late last year.

Ahead of Eid, on March 17, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan while talking to reporters outside Adiala Jail said any formal announcement regarding any protest movement against the government or talks with it will be made by leaders of opposition in the National Assembly and Senate

“[Mahmood Khan] Achakzai, along with Allama Raja Nasir Abbas, has been given the mandate to decide on protest and negotiation strategies,” Gohar said, adding that the party urged both leaders to utilise all available political options.

Achakzai and Abbas were elected, respectively, as leaders of the opposition in the National Assembly and the Senate with PTI support after the disqualification of their predecessors. They respectively head the PkMAP and MWM parties.

Gohar rejected the impression that internal issues were caused by the PTI founder’s sisters.
