Lok Sabha Election Results Analysis Live Updates: “This was a fight to protect the country’s constitution and we have won. The people have said they don’t want Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah to run the country,” Rahul Gandhi said at a press conference. His remarks come as the Indian National Congress is charting a comeback story, having almost doubled its tally of seats from 2019. The Indian Union’s power struggle is also being led by the Samajwadi Party, which is currently leading in Uttar Pradesh with 38 seats (including wins).
The BJP conceded defeat in the key seat of Faizabad, less than four months after the dedication of the Ram temple. The defeat in Ayodhya is seen not just as the loss of a constituency but also as an ideological defeat for the BJP, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi had performed the dedication ceremony just months before the elections and the prime minister and party leaders across the country had touted it as one of the party’s greatest achievements.

As of 7 p.m., the tightly contested NDA is leading with 293 seats, while Bloc India is ahead with 232. The BJP alone is short of the 272 seats needed for a majority. According to the Election Commission, the BJP is currently leading with 239 seats (including wins), down from 2019 when it won 303 seats. With the BJP unlikely to secure a majority, the formation of a new Narendra Modi government hinges on the support of two veteran kingmakers — Chandrababu Naidu of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), the BJP’s partners in the NDA, and Nitish Kumar of the Janata Dal (United) (JD(U)).
Mr Naidu and Nitish are likely to be Narendra Modi’s backbenchers in New Delhi.
The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and its ally Pawan Kalyan and the BJP’s Janasena Party (JSP) are on course for a landslide victory in Andhra Pradesh, completely reversing their 2019 results.
This marks a major turning point for the TDP-led alliance, which was on the brink of collapse just months before the elections following the arrest of party chief N. Chandrababu Naidu.
Jagan appears to have lost focus on governance in his efforts to implement the nine welfare schemes called “Navaratnalu” (nine jewels) that he promised during his campaign before the 2019 general elections. In so doing, he appears to have ignored the demands of a majority of the people for jobs, public infrastructure and development. In its five years in power, the YSRCP government has failed to attract large-scale investments or initiate new projects in the state.
