NEW DELHI: A massive security operation has been launched in Nassau County, New York, ahead of the T20 World Cup group stage clash between arch rivals India and Pakistan scheduled for Sunday.

Thousands of fans are expected to gather at a temporary 34,000-seat stadium in East Meadow, and officials are preparing for an event being dubbed a “Super Bowl on steroids.”

The fierce rivalry between India and Pakistan is one of the most intense in sport and the match is expected to draw millions of viewers around the world. Nassau County Mayor Bruce Blakeman acknowledged the magnitude of the event, saying, “India vs Pakistan is like a Super Bowl on steroids. We never expected it to be this big. We’re going to give it our all.”

To ensure a safe and secure environment, special security measures are being implemented in counties bordering New York City, with law enforcement officials at various levels working together.

New York Governor Kathy Hochle also announced increased security measures for the World Cup, citing reported threats, including one specifically related to the India-Pakistan match.

Blakeman expressed confidence in the safety measures, saying, “I’m confident this is a safe environment, or we wouldn’t be hosting it.”

The high demand for tickets is a testament to the intense rivalry and passion surrounding the game: As of Monday afternoon, the cheapest tickets available on resale site StubHub were priced at $790.

The United States is co-hosting the T20 World Cup with the West Indies, with matches also being played in Texas and Florida, and the event is seen as an opportunity for cricket to gain a foothold in the US market and pave the way for it to return to the Olympic Games in 2028.
