How is your team performing so far?
India The team got off to a strong start, restricting their opponents to 96 on a notoriously difficult pitch in New York to beat Ireland by eight wickets, before reaching the minimum target in the 13th over with a fifty from Rohit Sharma and a winning goal from Rishabh Pant.
PakistanBut after both teams scored 159 each in the first 20 overs in Dallas, Babar Azam’s men failed to chase the 19 needed in extra time and began the match with a shock Super Over defeat to co-hosts USA.
Babar gave an honest assessment after the match, saying, “We haven’t played well in all aspects – fielding, pitching and batting.” So there’s a lot to improve on!
Who do you think will win?
India are the bookmakers’ favourites with odds priced at around 2/5. This is due to the team’s opening match results in this tournament as well as the fact that India are a dominant force and have won six of their seven previous T20 World Cup matches against Pakistan, including the last tournament in Australia in 2022.
Wasn’t that when Virat Kohli played a match-winning innings?
And it certainly was. Kohli scored 82 off 53 balls and India reached the target of 160 off the final ball in an extraordinary finale. Kohli’s team was 31-4 after 6.1 overs but the Melbourne Cricket Ground crowd was enthralled, needing 48 with 18 balls to go.
That’s dramatic. Can you tell me more about it?
In the 18th over, Kohli smashed two leg-side fours off Shaheen Shah Afridi and another through extra cover to help India reduce the required run to 31 from 12 balls, while he smashed consecutive sixes off Haris Rauf at the end of the 19th over – first a magnificent strike over the bowler’s head and then a brilliant flick over leg – to reduce the required run to 16 from six balls.
So, what happened?
How it all began! Hardik Pandya was run out by Mohammed Nawaz off the first ball of the final over, ending his stand of 117 with Kohli and giving Pakistan a huge advantage as India could only score a total of three runs off the next two balls. The target was 13 runs off three balls…
So what was the final development?
Nawaz goes off the radar. The spinner bowls a full toss which Kohli smashes for six and, to make matters worse, is adjudged a no-ball for height, giving India seven. An exhausted Nawaz bowls the next ball wide and, after Nawaz free-hits Kohli and the ball falls into the deep third, India get three. Now we need two for two…
And what happens after that?
Further drama: Nawaz had a friend. Sky Sports Dinesh Karthik brought Pakistan back into the game with a stomp off the fifth ball of the over, but then bowled another wide, this time down the leg side, to tie the score with one ball to go. Ravichandran Ashwin chipped the last ball to mid-on for a single to seal a famous win for India and break Pakistan’s hearts.
Poor Pakistan! Have they ever beaten India in the World Cup?
They have done so just once in both 50-over and 20-over matches. In the longer white-ball format, they have now lost eight from eight, following last year’s disastrous performance in Ahmedabad, where they lost their last eight wickets for just 36 runs to tumble from 155-2 to 191 to lose by seven wickets.
So when did this victory happen?
Pakistan’s only win against India in the World Cup came in 2021 in the UAE, and it was a huge one indeed. Babar Azam’s Pakistan won by 10 wickets in the group stage of the final T20 tournament that year. India were restricted to 151 for 7 in Dubai before Babar (68no) and Mohammed Rizwan (79no) took Pakistan past that total with 13 balls to spare. The boys in green will be hoping for a repeat result on Sunday.
