Indian candidate wins 2024 UK election

Keir Starmer’s Labour Party won a landslide victory on Friday, beating Rishi’s Conservative Party.

However, a significant number of Indian candidates ran in the general election, and some from both parties performed remarkably.

Here is a list of Indian origin leaders who ranked highly in UK opinion polls:

Rishi Sunak (Conservative Party)

Despite the Conservatives’ dismal performance, Rishi Sunak won in Northallerton and Richmond in Yorkshire, where Labour’s Tom Wilson was defeated by Sunak by around 13,000 votes.

Following the result, Mr Sunak thanked “the many Conservative candidates, the countless volunteers and the millions of voters – thank you for your hard work, your support and your vote” in a statement.

Suella Braverman (Conservative)

Conservative Councillor Suella Braverman retained her seat in the Fareham and Waterlooville constituency.

In the last reshuffle of the Sunak Cabinet, she was replaced as Home Secretary by James Cleverley.

Ms Braverman has been the Member of Parliament for Fareham since 2015. She was made Home Secretary from October 2022 to November 2023.

Priti Patel (Conservative Party)

Priti Patel, a Conservative member of the Gujarati parliament, ran again in the Witham constituency in Essex and won with 37.2 percent of the vote.

Ms Patel also served as Home Secretary from 2019 to 2022 and has been the Member of Parliament for Witham since 2010.

Kanishka Narayan (Labor Party)

Kanishka Narayan, the Welsh Labour candidate for the Valley of Glamorgan, was elected, defeating Alan Cairns, the Conservative member who served as the Valley’s MP from 2010 to 2024. This makes Narayan Wales’ first ethnic minority MP.

Satvir Kaur (Labor Party)

Labour’s Satbir Kaur won the Southampton test constituency by a margin of 15,945 votes.

She is also Leader of Southampton City Council from 2022 to 2023, making her the first female Sikh to lead a local government position in the UK.

Shivani Raja (Conservative Party)

Conservative candidate Shivani Raja received over 4,000 votes, defeating Labour candidate Rajesh Agarwal to win the seat of Leicester East, where the leading candidates were former MPs Claude Webb and Keith Vaz, who ran as independents.

Navendu Mishra (Labor Party)

Labour’s incumbent Stockport MP Navendu Mishra won with 21,787 votes, ensuring his return to Westminster. Mishra has been the MP for Stockport since the 2019 UK general election.

Preet Kaur Gill (Labor Party)

Labour member Preet Kaur Gill has been re-elected for Birmingham Edgbaston. Ms Gill was previously Shadow Minister for Primary Care and Public Health, a position she will hold from 2023.

Gagan Mohindra (Conservative Party)

Conservative MP Gagan Mohindra won the seat of South West Hertfordshire with 16,458 votes. His closest rival, Sally Symington of the Liberal Democrats, came second with 12,002 votes.
