When the Indian Union is formed in early 2023, the question of who will snatch which vote share in each state has become a hot topic of debate. Will the Indian National Congress shift its votes to regional parties or vice versa? Now that the results of the 2024 Indian Lok Sabha elections are out, here are the results.
According to political expert Abhimanyu Bharti, the Congress benefited in states such as Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, where it was a “direct alliance,” while in West Bengal and Punjab, where the two allies fought each other, the Congress was able to reduce the seat share of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance.
Moreover, the analysis found that in West Bengal, Kerala and Punjab, where Indian allies competed against each other, regional parties appeared to win more seats than the BJP.
Let’s take a closer look:
The Indian bloc is in a “direct” alliance
Uttar Pradesh: The SP won 37 seats, the highest number among all other political parties. The Indian National Congress won six seats out of the total 80 seats in the Lok Sabha. In 2019, the SP contested the elections in alliance with the Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP), but the SP won five seats and the Indian National Congress only one. In the 2024 elections, both parties saw an increase in their number of seats and vote share.
Maharashtra: The Indian National Congress pulled off a surprise win in the Lok Sabha with 13 seats, more than any other party in the state after winning just one seat in the 2019 elections. The Congress also won 16.96% of the total votes in Maharashtra, a slight increase from 16.41% in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
The Congress Party’s ally, the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Takray), won nine seats, while the Congress Party (Sharatchandra Pawar) won eight. The Indian Union won 30 of the 48 Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra.
Tamil Nadu: Its ally, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), gave up three seats to the Indian National Congress and one to the Communist Party of India, while both parties gave up one seat each to the DMK. The seats transferred between the Indian bloc countries in Tamil Nadu are as follows:
Congress to DMK: Alani
From DMK to Congress: Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Tirunelveli
CPIM to DMK: Coimbatore
DMK to CPIM: Dindigul
The DMK won 22 seats in Tamil Nadu, sending 39 members to the Lok Sabha, while the Indian National Congress won nine seats in the state. The 2024 election results were similar to those of 2019. In the last Lok Sabha elections, the DMK won 24 seats and the Indian National Congress won eight seats.
The Indian National Congress’ vote share in Tamil Nadu fell from 12.62% to 10.6%, while the DMK’s vote share fell from 33.53% to 26.9%.
India bloc forms ‘tactical’ alliance: Has NDA’s seat share declined?
West Bengal: The TMC and Indian National Congress, allies in the Indian Union, contested the elections alone in Bengal. The TMC, led by Mamata Banerjee, won 29 of the 42 Lok Sabha seats, up from 22 in 2019. The BJP plummeted to 12. The Indian National Congress won just one seat in the 2024 elections, down from two in the 2019 elections.
but, The TMC saw a slight increase from 43.69 percent. In Bengal, it reached 45 percent. Parliament has declined By 2024, it will increase from 5.6% to 4%.
Punjab: The Indian block alliance, the BJP and the Ahmed Party, contested against each other in Punjab, with the Ahmed Party winning the Anandpur Sahib seat from the BJP, but the BJP did not lose any seats to the Ahmed Party.
What was affected was their turnout. Parliament’s vote share falls This will increase from 40.58 percent in 2019 to 26 percent in 2024. AAP’s vote share rises It is expected to increase significantly from 7.46% in 2019 to 26% in 2024.
The Indian National Congress won seven seats in 2024, down from eight in 2019. The Bharatiya Janata Party won three seats, up from one in 2019. The Bharatiya Janata Party was unable to expand in Punjab this time around, losing the two seats it won in 2019.
Kerala: here, The parliament’s vote share fell by about 2%. It is projected to increase from 37.4% in 2019 to 35% in 2024. CPIM fell slightly It will increase from 25.9 in 2019 to 25.82 in 2024.
However, in Kerala, the BJP recorded its first victory by winning one seat in the state. The party had not won a Lok Sabha seat there in the 2019 elections. The party’s vote share has also increased from 12.9% in 2019 to 16% in 2024.
The Indian alliance’s BJP and Communist Party of India (Marxist) contested against each other in Kerala. The BJP won 14 of the southern state’s 20 Lok Sabha seats, down from 15 in 2019. Of the 14 seats, the BJP won the Alappuzha seat, the only one won by its partner, the Communist Party of India (Marxist), in 2019. Meanwhile, Alathur was transferred from the BJP to the Communist Party of India in 2024.
India: From Chaos to Great Revival
When the Indian Union was formed last year, there was debate over whether political parties could hold their members together. As the 2024 Lok Sabha elections draw closer, the opposition alliance has started to unravel. How?
Mamata Banerjee’s TMC is contesting the Lok Sabha elections alone in West Bengal, the Indian National Congress and AAP are competing against each other in Punjab and JD(U) leader Nitish Kumar has severed ties with the Indian Union to join the rival Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
However, the Indian Union is facing a tough fight against the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, leading to unexpected results in Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra.
