New Delhi:
After six weeks of marathon voting in seven phases, the counting of votes for the 2024 Indian Lok Sabha elections has begun and the results will be known today. The counting will begin at 8 am amid tight security.
Voting will take place between April 19 and June 1 in India’s lower house of parliament, with each of the 543 seats receiving one representative in the lower house. To form a government, a party or coalition needs to win a majority of 272 seats.
This year’s Lok Sabha elections are India’s second longest since India’s first elections in 1951-52.
Trends usually emerge within an hour of counting and results are clear by the afternoon of counting day. Counting of EVM votes begins 30 minutes after the counting of postal votes, according to election officials.
This time, the BJP has set a target of 370 seats while the NDA has set a target of 400 seats.
The BJP’s election campaign was led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. As the party’s star campaigner, he took part in more than 200 events, including rallies and roadshows.
The Congress party, weakened by electoral defeats and a wave of defections, is facing off against the Bharatiya Janata Party as part of the Indian opposition coalition, which has held joint rallies by opposition leaders during its election campaign.
The contest between the BJP and the Indian Union in India’s Lok Sabha election reflects a broader ideological struggle.
