Raipur: The Indian National Congress’s inquiry committee, currently conducting an in-depth investigation into the party’s disappointing performance in the Chhattisgarh Assembly elections, convened its fourth and final meeting at Rajiv Bhawan in Raipur on Monday to analyse the electoral defeat.

During the deliberations, an anonymous letter was circulated placing the blame for the election defeat squarely on former Prime Minister Bhupesh Baghel. Addressed to Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge, the letter blamed Baghel’s arrogance as the main reason for the party’s defeat. Despite these serious allegations, no official response has been issued by the Congress till date.

The letter also criticised other prominent Congress leaders, citing scandals and potential legal issues as contributing factors and suggesting a conspiracy to ensure the party’s defeat. The letter specifically named leaders such as Mahant, Akbar and Tamradhwaj, alleging internal discord and mismanagement.

The comprehensive four-page document outlines multiple reasons behind the Congress’s defeat in the elections. Notably, the document is signed by an unnamed party supporter rather than any specific individual.

Responding to the ongoing monitoring, state Congress president Deepak Baij acknowledged the internal coordination challenges among the powers and organisational structures that affected the election outcome. He suggested that senior leaders have suggested measures to strengthen the party’s organisational strength.

Sources close to the committee revealed huge dissatisfaction among grassroots workers and leaders, pointing out that internal factionalism and resentment among workers played a major role in the electoral defeat. Similar concerns were expressed at the first meeting at Rajiv Bhawan in Raipur, highlighting organisational weaknesses and widespread dissatisfaction with strategic decisions.

During its inspection of certain constituencies such as Rajnandgaon and Bastar, the commission received reports highlighting allegations that the grievances and opinions of workers were ignored.

The fact-finding committee is continuing its assessment in all constituencies with a view to preparing a comprehensive report to be submitted to the state assembly leadership, which will seek to address grievances, rectify organisational deficiencies and map out a strategy to rehabilitate the party’s future electoral prospects.
