Despite a spectacular finish to the 108th Indy 500 race, there’s no rest for tired drivers in the NTT IndyCar Series.
The Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix continues a grueling race weekend of action that began with the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach in mid-April and doesn’t end until Road America on June 9th.
IndyCar teams will have been on the race track for seven of the eight weeks, including road courses, street courses and, in the biggest race of the season, oval courses.
IndyCar points leader Alex Palou, who finished fifth in the 108th Indy 500, enters the Chevrolet GP as last year’s race winner. The Chip Ganassi Racing star won from pole position last year in the debut of the nine-turn, 1.7-mile downtown layout anchored by the GM Renaissance Center.
Two-time Indy 500 winner Josef Newgarden has been in good form on street courses this year (he would have had two top-five finishes had he not been disqualified at St. Pete), and Brickyard runner-up Pato O’Ward could be looking to bounce back at Motown after crashing early in last year’s race.
There will likely be some surprising faces in the starting lineup.
Hélio Castroneves made a surprise appearance in place of Tom Blomqvist. He will miss the next two races due to a mediocre start to his IndyCar career.Tristan Vautier will be competing in the series for the first time in nearly seven years and will return to Dale Coyne Racing (he earned a career-best fourth place finish at Detroit Belle Isle in 2015 for DCR).
Theo Pourchere (Arrow McLaren No. 6) and Jack Harvey (DCR No. 18) also return to the entry list.

Race Distance: The race consists of 100 laps (170 miles) on a 1.7 mile, nine-curve street course in downtown Detroit.
Tire allocation: Six sets of primary and four sets of alternate tyres will be used over the weekend. Teams must use one set of primary and one set of alternate tyres for each race. Teams with rookie drivers will be provided with an extra set for the first session of the weekend. Indy NXTThree new sets will be used during the race weekend, with two sets carried over from the Indianapolis event likely to be used in pre-qualifying practice sessions.
Push to Pass: The total time is 150 seconds, with a maximum of 15 seconds per activation. Push-to-pass, which provides approximately 50 additional horsepower, cannot be used on the initial start or restart unless it occurs in the final two laps or three minutes of a timed race.Indy NXT: The total time is 150 seconds, with a maximum of 15 seconds per boot.
