An inmate who escaped from the Fremont County Detention Center has been arrested by authorities in Colorado Springs, law enforcement officials said.
Keegan VanVleet, 45, escaped from the county jail around 1 p.m. Friday. He had been taken into custody by the Canon City Police Department on charges of attempted murder, possession of a dangerous weapon, prohibited use of a weapon, possession of a weapon by an ex-offender and domestic violence, according to county jail officials.
Authorities said there was a heavy police presence in the area of Highway 50, McKinzie Avenue, Grandview Avenue and the east end of Cañon City following the report and asked residents to avoid the area.
CBS News Colorado news partner KKTV reported that around 10 p.m. Friday, Colorado Springs Police announced that members of the U.S. Marshals Service’s Colorado Violent Offenders Task Force, working with Colorado State Police, received information that VanVleet was in Colorado Springs.
Police dogs Lofgren and Riggs were on scene and warned VanVleet that he would be bitten if he didn’t stop. Authorities said VanVleet then stopped running and followed all commands. VanVleet was then taken into custody, according to KKTV.
