ISLAMABAD: Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir have called for peace and stability in the region, months after the two neighbors carried out retaliatory airstrikes against alleged terrorist hideouts on rival land. , discussed border security.

General Munir called on Raisi, who will be the first head of state of any country to visit Pakistan after the February 8 general elections, and stressed the need for “improved coordination” against terrorists, inter-military public relations (ISPR) and media sectors. emphasized. General Munir described the Pakistan-Iran border as a “border of peace and friendship” and called for adjustments along the border to prevent terrorists from jeopardizing the long-standing brotherly relationship between the two neighboring countries, the newspaper said. The statement said the talks between the two officials focused on common interests, particularly regional peace, stability and border security.

“Both sides agreed on the need to strengthen bilateral cooperation, jointly aiming for regional stability and economic prosperity,” the ISPR statement said.

The Iranian president arrived at Lahore’s Allama Iqbal International Airport on Tuesday morning and was received by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.

The Ministry of External Affairs had earlier announced that Raisi would visit Lahore and Karachi and meet provincial leaders.

On Monday, Raisi was received by Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at the Prime Minister’s Office. The two leaders held wide-ranging talks, agreed on joint efforts to eradicate terrorism, and discussed ways to foster bilateral relations at the political, economic, trade and cultural levels.

During the meeting, President Raisi and Prime Minister Sharif agreed on joint efforts to eradicate terrorism, state-run Radio Pakistan reported.

The two leaders also held talks to strengthen trade and communication links between the two countries.

In the presence of Raisi and Sharif, Iranian and Pakistani officials signed eight documents aimed at boosting cooperation in various areas.

President Raisi said in a joint press conference that Iran and Pakistan have decided to expand trade to $10 billion.
