The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6, announced on July 10, is Samsung’s latest and greatest foldable phone. Like its predecessor, the Galaxy Z Flip 5, the model aims to revive the folding flip phone market, which was considered outdated just a few years ago.

The Galaxy Z Flip 6 boasts a more powerful processor (Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3) and an improved battery. On the outside, it has a reinforced Armor Aluminum frame and a slightly larger secondary screen. It will ship in Light Blue, Mint, Silver Shadow, Yellow, Crafted Black, Peach and White.

With these upgrades, have you ever wondered if the Galaxy Z Flip 6 is waterproof? It’s time to find out the answer.

Is the Galaxy Z Flip 6 waterproof?

Joe Malling / Digital Trends

The Galaxy Z Flip 6 has a higher IP rating than its predecessor, but it’s still far from waterproof: It has a dust and water resistance rating of IP48, while the Galaxy Z Fold 5 has a dust and water resistance rating of IPX8.

To be clear, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 is waterproof.Resistant, It’s not waterproof, though — an important distinction that we’ll go into a bit more detail on below.

What does IP48 rating mean?

Joe Malling / Digital Trends

With an IP48 rating, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 is now dustproof for the first time, in addition to being waterproof as before. A “4” rating ensures protection against debris larger than 1mm, while “8” means the phone can be submerged up to 1.5 metres deep for up to 30 minutes. The IP48 rating is an ingress protection code that specifies the dust- and water-resistant level of an enclosure.

Bottom line: The Galaxy Z Flip 6 is not waterproof. Therefore, use caution when using the phone near water and avoid submerging it. Prolonged exposure to water can cause serious damage and is typically not covered by a regular warranty. If the phone has come into contact with water, it is important to avoid using or charging it.

You may also want to consider purchasing the two-year Samsung Care Plus protection plan, which will ensure that if your Galaxy Z Flip 6 meets with an accident within two years, you can get it repaired at a minimal cost.

The Galaxy Z Flip 6 was announced at the Samsung Galaxy Unpacked event in Paris, where the company also unveiled the Galaxy Z Fold 6, Galaxy Watch 7, and the all-new Galaxy Ring.
