Virginia Tech offensive tackle target Jahmiel Atkins decided today not to enroll at Virginia Tech.
However, Kentucky appears to have been a race to lose, according to On3’s recruiting prediction machine. On3 RPM predicted Atkins had a 96.1% chance of committing to the Wildcats, ahead of second-place Virginia Tech at an astounding 1.4%. Atkins spoke very highly of Kentucky during his recruiting, telling 247Sports, “What’s not to like about them? They’re a powerhouse school. They’re a downhill running team and a great passing team when you need to pass,” so it’s clear he fell in love with the Wildcats.
Atkins narrowed his list down to three schools before committing to attending, and after official visits to the University of Kentucky and Virginia Tech, those schools were naturally on his final list. To the shock of some, the University of Minnesota was listed as third on his final list.
Jahmiel Atkins is a unanimous three-star recruit who attends Trotwood-Madison High School in Dayton, Ohio.
Listed at 6-foot-8, he is ranked by 247Sports as the 47th-best offensive tackle in the 2025 freshman class and the 19th-best player in the state of Ohio. He also holds offers from Arizona State, Eastern Kentucky, Eastern Michigan, Kent State, Marshall, Toledo, Tulsa, West Virginia and Western Kentucky.
Prior to Jahmiel’s commitment, Josh Edwards of 247Sports gave a Crystal Ball recommendation for Atkins to land at UK.
Atkins is an extremely exciting three-star player who will be a great addition to the Virginia Tech Hokies’ 2025 recruiting class. Atkins is a perfect fit for what head coach Brent Pry and offensive line coach Ron Crook are looking to build on the offensive line. At 6’8 and over 270 pounds, Atkins will definitely turn some heads based on his size alone. There are still plenty of top prospects remaining that the Virginia Tech coaching staff is looking to bring to campus.
Virginia Tech has already done a solid job recruiting offensive linemen, adding two three-stars in the process in 6-foot-7.5 interior lineman Carter Stallard and 275-pound interior lineman Nathaniel Wright.
Virginia Tech is currently ranked 43rd overall in the 2025 class, according to 247Sports, despite only having 14 freshmen committed to enroll.
