Former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti alleged that Swain was pursuing a “communal policy” and had not been removed till date due to “lack of accountability” here.
“The DGP is busy with political adjustments. His job has been to break the PDP and harass people, including journalists. He is weaponising passport issuance and verification procedures. He is ensuring that UAPA is imposed on more and more people,” Mufti alleged. She said New Delhi has been ruling Jammu and Kashmir for the last six years but the situation here has worsened.
“Many police commissioners from outside have worked here and done a good job. None worked at the municipal level but now everything is being done at the municipal level,” she said. She asked the defence and home ministers to take note of the deteriorating situation in Jammu and Kashmir and hold them accountable and lay off those responsible.
Nasir Wani, former home minister of erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir and a leader of the National Conference, said the current government cannot take credit for good things and blame others for bad situations. “A career civil servant should not make political statements and focus on work. In the last 35 years, 3,000 NC workers have been killed. We do not need a certificate of nationalism from any civil servant,” Wani said.
“Such comments made by a serving police officer would not have been tolerated even in a country with a basic functioning democracy,” said Sajjad Lone, another former minister.
