Jharkhand Elections 2024: 685 candidates to contest in 1st Assembly polls

A total of 685 candidates are in the fray for the first phase of polls in Jharkhand Assembly after 58 candidates withdrew on Wednesday, election officials said.

The first round of voting for the state’s 43 parliamentary districts will take place on November 13th.

A total of 805 candidates from 43 parliamentary constituencies submitted their nomination papers between October 18th and 25th. He said that after due diligence, nominations of 743 candidates were accepted.

“A total of 685 candidates are in the fray in the first round of polls in Jharkhand,” said a source from the CEO’s office here.

He said Jamshedpur West Assembly constituency has the highest number of registered candidates at 28, while Jagannathpur has the least number of registered candidates at 8.

In 2019, 633 candidates from 43 seats participated in the vote.

Elections for the state’s 81-member assembly will be held in two stages on November 13th and 20th, with votes counted on November 23rd.

The nomination process for the second phase of Jharkhand assembly polls concluded on Tuesday with a total of 634 candidates filing their papers.

Thirty-eight seats in parliament will be voted on on November 20th.

Jharkhand Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) K. Ravi Kumar told reporters that scrutiny of candidates for the second phase of Jharkhand polls was held on Wednesday.

Kumar said some candidates have been asked to provide the required information by 11 am on Friday.

He said a total of Rs 121.14 million in cash and goods were seized in the state after the announcement of assembly elections.

Most seizures were made by the Jharkhand police.

According to an official statement from the Election Commission, the maximum recovery in cash and goods was Rs 3.03 billion in Khunti, Rs 2.8 billion in Giridih and Rs 1.97 billion in East Singhbhum.

Police said around Rs 1.14 crore was recovered from a school under Namkum police station limits in Ranchi.

Kumar said he has not received any detailed report on the seizure so far. “I hope to have it by tomorrow,” he said.

He also said that so far 22 FIRs have been lodged against people for violation of model code of conduct and action is being taken as per rules.
