It’s not uncommon for outdated trends to make surprising comebacks after hundreds (or even thousands) of years. Design has a rich history, and we’re always intrigued when we see old styles make a comeback.
Sand Dunes and No Country for Old Men Josh Brolin, star of the past, present, and future, has embraced a vintage-inspired decor style in his home, and we totally support it. Photographer Michael Clifford posted photos of his retro-inspired dining space, complete with skirted chairs and a round wooden table. The space is warm and sophisticated, and it’s making us think about how we might incorporate chair skirts into our own dining spaces.
Chair skirts first came into widespread use over 100 years ago and not only do they look very elegant, they are also very practical.
“Chair skirts, or slipcovers, have a rich history dating back to the early 20th century, when they were originally used to protect furniture from dust and wear,” says designer Nina Lichtenstein. “Today, they’re prized for their power to transform a dining room’s aesthetic, offering a versatile way to incorporate pattern, color, and texture.”

Lichtenstein is a pattern pro when it comes to chair skirts, but emphasizes that prints should be added thoughtfully to an existing design scheme.
“Incorporating patterned chair skirts, like the green-and-white chair skirts in Brolin’s dining room, adds visual interest and depth,” she says. “Patterns can range from subtle to bold, depending on your overall design scheme. When choosing a pattern, consider how it will coordinate with other elements in the room, such as the rug, curtains, and light fixtures.”
Lichtenstein says another benefit of chair skirts is their ability to introduce or reinterpret an existing color palette.
“In Brolin’s dining room, the chair skirts match the rug, lampshade, and even the wall color, creating a cohesive look,” she says. “To create a cohesive design, choose colors that work with your existing décor, and don’t be afraid to play around with hues and tones to add depth.”
Finally, Lichtenstein says the texture you choose for your chair skirts can have a big impact on the look of a room.
“The fabric you choose for your curtains and chair skirts can have a big impact on the feel of a room,” she says. “Heavy, dark fabrics, like the curtains in Brolin’s dining room, will exude an elegant, subdued atmosphere, while lighter, brighter fabrics, like the chair skirts, will give the space an airy, casual feel. Consider the texture, weight, and color of your fabric in the context of your overall design and desired feel.”
