Justin Jefferson signs with Vikings, bucking recent NFL trend

The Minnesota Vikings just announced a mega contract extension with wide receiver Justin Jefferson that will break the record for highest salary and most guaranteed money for a non-quarterback player, and he certainly deserves it.

The move will be welcomed by many, including those within the organisation.

“Justin is an exceptionally talented player and a great person, and it’s an honor to coach him and have him as a team captain,” said head coach Kevin O’Connell. “His positive energy and love of the game are evident in the way he strives every day to be the best at his craft. As his coaches, we will do everything we can to help him reach his full potential. I’d like to thank Wirfs, Kwesi, Rob Brzezinski and the entire staff for their dedication to ensuring one of the brightest stars in professional sports continues his career with the Minnesota Vikings.”

Justin Jefferson’s contract extension bucks the trend

But the deal is somewhat surprising, especially for its duration. The wide receiver contract market has shifted toward signing three-year deals with the hope of getting another shot at a big contract before turning 30. Jefferson, now 25, would have been able to negotiate his next contract at age 28, giving him a great chance to get that big deal.

A four-year deal gives him more security but also a little less negotiating power to get that next big deal a year early, which is a bit surprising but probably not surprising to learn he needs a fourth year to get that kind of guaranteed money.

A fourth season with Jefferson would be huge for the Vikings, as his contract runs through the 2028 season.
