The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government (K-P) has decided, for the first time in the province, to provide CyberKnife and PET (Positron Emission Tomography) scan facilities for cancer patients.

The CyberKnife robotic radiosurgery and PET/CT scan services will be made available at Hayatabad Medical Complex in Peshawar.

“The CyberKnife System is a non-invasive treatment for cancerous and non-cancerous tumors and other conditions where radiation therapy is indicated. Due to the absence of PET scan facilities in K-P, cancer patients had previously been forced to seek treatment in Karachi and other provinces. Proposals have already been requested from companies for the project,” said Advisor on Health Ehtesham Ali.

“The CyberKnife system will provide non-surgical, highly precise radiosurgery for complex and inoperable tumors, said Ehtesham Ali. The PET/CT scan will enable timely cancer diagnosis, accurate staging, and appropriate treatment planning for patients,” stated the health advisor.

The availablity of such medical facilities would allow residents of K-P to be diagnosed and treated in Peshawar, whereas previously people were required to travel to other cities like Lahore and Karachi to seek cancer treating facilities.

“It will help position K-P as a leader in modern oncology within Pakistan Cancer patients, as patients will no longer need to travel to other cities for diagnosis and treatment.”

“This historic step marks a new era in cancer treatment in the province and will fill a long-standing gap”.

Over 11,700 new cancer cases are reported annually in the province of K-P, making this facility a timely and life-saving initiative.

Healthcare specialists revealed at the event organised by the Society of Medical Oncology Pakistan (SMOP) last month that only 3% of patients in the country are identified at an early, curable stage.

“This facility will not only offer advanced treatment to patients but will also serve as a center for medical research, training, and capacity building. This initiative will help reduce the financial and psychological burden on patients and their families. This is a historic breakthrough that will save countless lives,” concluded Ehtesham Ali.
