Last night, around 10pm Thursday, people across Karachi faced problems with their internet and online services. Internet service providers such as PTCL and Stormfiber, as well as services and applications such as WhatsApp, YouTube, Amazon Web Services and Instagram, saw outages, reports Downdetector.

According to the outage monitor, PTCL and Stormfiber services hit snags within the same time frame, between 9pm and midnight. PTCL saw 112 reported outages at its peak around 10.30pm, while Stormfiber saw 59 reported outages. People mostly complained about internet outages, though some experienced a total blackout of services.

On Friday, the PTCL spokesperson denied there were any outages at all. “There wasn’t any issue at PTCL’s side.”

Meanwhile, Stormfiber’s automated call response said “we are experiencing a sudden degradation at one of our upstream [service providers],” and are “coordinating with the upstream provider” to fix these issues.

Social platforms down

People also complained about Instagram and Facebook going down, with the number of reports for both hitting maximums of 134 and 65, respectively. There were also reports of YouTube and X facing outages, but there were only a total of 16 reports for the former and four reports for the latter.

Can someone tell me if it’s my ptcl dying or twitter is lagging in Pakistan again 😭😭

WhatsApp saw a peak of 120 reported outages, with 55% of users reporting problems with sending messages, 32% with server connectivity, and 13% with the application itself

On average, people’s complaints were regarding the websites, respective applications and server connectivity, but the majority of complaints centred around an inability to connect to the internet.

Asking some Stormfiber users, most of them said that they had “really poor internet” last night; however, one user didn’t see much change in their connection quality. For the most part, these issues only persisted until midnight, with people seeing a return to normal services as of this morning.
